OWNING OR RENTING A HOME
For many Spanish people owning a home is a dream, for others it´s their worst nightmare. The percentage of families who rent in Spain is 17%, below the European average (33%). Because of the economic situation and the change of mentality in our country, especially young people choose renting as a life option.
The main disadvantage happens to have a forced relationship with the owner, you will have to negotiate many points with him, for example, who pays for assessments, repairs and so on. Another disadvantage is that this money you invest on home is lost when you leave the flat/house. Furthermore, if you rent, the house will never be yours and you´ll continue paying rent for years.
However there are also important advantages. The main ones are that you need less initial saving in the case of house purchase and you will have more control expenses every month, for example, you pay each month the agreed rent with the landlord in the contract and nothing more. In addition, renting means fewer formalities and paper work and finally greater flexibility if you want or need to change home such as finding a new and better one.
In conclusion, owning a home could be a dream, and probably the main investment you´ll make in life, because of that, you must consider your own situation and decide what could be better to you.
