Here's the video we worked on in class, which led us to a debate on what is needed for Spanish to become 'the' global language! which is one of the possibilities pointed at by Professor David Crystal, one of the most important linguists ever! Students came up with all sorts of ideas, but were generally quite clear that this scenario is very hard to attain! Well, you never know what the future holds!
For the time being, I hope those of you who couldn't come to class enjoy this interview.
While you watch and listen to this video try to answer these two questions:
1. What example does David Crystal give of the English spoken in India?
2. How does he connect this example with McDonalds slogan 'I'm lovin' it'?
You can make a comment with the answers to these questions!
Enjoy!
David Crystal says that Indian people don't use the tradicional English , they speaking Indian english, no British english, no american english. It' s a way to reflect their culture and identity.
ReplyDeleteIndian people use present continuos to speaking in verbs that we don't use in England, such as, thinking, remembering, annoying. There're a change, a language traslations in every country. The use of present continuos are increasing, this what happens in the advertisement of MacDonals, I'm lovin it, is to say, I'm loving it.
Thanks very much for your comment Fina! I think you got the gist of the idea put through in the video, though I'd say that 'i'm lovin' it' is the same as 'I love it'!! Anyway, we can discuss it any time you like! All the best
ReplyDeleteDavid Crystal gives the example of Indian English differences with British English in the use of present tense forms. They use the present in the continuous form instead of simple. And he said that this agree with the general trend we can observe in the MacDonald's slogan "I'm lovin' it". I think.
