Wish you were here - Pink Floyd

Some time ago I told you about this song where you can find an instance of the verb 'tell' with the pattern 'tell something from something'.
Listen to the song and try to work out the meaning of the verb. Fill in the gaps in the lyrics and answer the three questions underneath. At the end of the document you will find the complete lyrics. Recommendation: try to learn the song by heart and belt it out!! (or just hum it, depending on how well you get on with your neighbours).
Enjoy!!

  1. I´m not sure. Maybe this song has several interpretations.

    For instance:
    - a person who is blaming one another, like he/she were a traitor.
    - the consequences of a war, or the industrial world.
    - someone who is mentally insane, and he/she can't distinguish things and facts.

Anyway, I had heard this song before, but the only thing I had got was "I wish you were here". Although It's a good song, it's not one of my favourites. ;)

  2. Well, it's a good try, but maybe it's too vague. What's that 'telling the difference between things'? What does it have to do with the general meaning? I'm not sure, but maybe that could help find a general explanation, if there is any!
By the way, what's your favourites then?

    1. I didn't know that meaning of "tell" (distinguish or identify), now I think I got it.
About the general meaning, I still don't catch it.

  3. I'm not sure what's the song about, but maybe is about a person who things that another person has changed but he can't distinguish the good from the bad.
The second part of the song maybe want to say that we are all equal and have the same fears.

    1. The song is clearly divided into two parts, that I agree with. I'm happy to see that you have clearly understood the meaning of 'tell sth from sth'. Well done!

  4. I think the singer's girlfriend or wife is angry with him, but he thinks he's right. For this reason he doesn't apologize her. He wants to come with her but he doesn't want to assume his fault. So, he says "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl"

    1. Wow! That's a deep psychological description of characters. Maybe you should tell where you see that anger in the two characters depicted...

  5. I think the song talks about how difficult is to make decisions because he doesn't know to choose one thing and its opposite. ¿?

I suggest you another 80s British group: Depeche Mode. A Colombian family made this tribute. Good English level!! What a envy!!

    1. I'm not sure whether it is a question of 'not knowing' what to choose or a question of 'not being able to tell the difference between one thing and the other'. Think about it..
Thanks for the link! That's what I call creativity!!

  6. I guess it is the second one. He/she is not able to tell the difference. So making decisions is difficult.

  7. I think this song is abouta a person who miss a friend/soul who now has problems and can't distinguish the heaven from the hell and has excanged a minor role in live for a lead role in a cage. What a pity!
    I love Pink Floyd

  10. In my opinion the song is about a person who is dissapointed in someone or with something. I think the singer questions people who prefer to live a frivolous life in order to live according theirs feelings.

In spite of that, the singer wishes to be with the another person, with his/her soul, his/her problems and fears.

  11. To my mind , this song is an approach about lives and feelings, maybe their wonder if if they have been able to distinguish and apreciarte goods in life.
-tell sth from sth, it means or is similar to: identify, recognize, differentiate.
-wall-on part: take a role without importance, I mean, a minor role.

tell sth. from sth, it means or is similar to: identify, recognize, differentiate.
